The Greens were rarely threatened throughout the contest in Nottinghamshire. They could have secured victory by a much greater margin than the goals that Dom Kew and Jacob Fenton afforded them at the Stag Ground.
Player/Manager Tom Ward – who made a cameo appearance from the bench despite fighting a bout of COVID-19 - was nonetheless pleased to see his side work their way back into the top five after a shaky run of results throughout September;
“I think we’re a threat in any game in this league. But I thought today that defensively, as a unit, we were superb, and that is where we got our joy from, through our pressing and hard work – I’m delighted with the boys.”
The Greens made a strong start in Nottinghamshire. They could have led inside the opening five minutes when Ryan Lennon was sent through by Kyle Watkins and subsequently forced a fine save out of Joe Fryatt in the Kimberley goal.
Fryatt was then in action again a few moments later, saving once again from a Lennon effort before the Greens impressive start got the goal it deserved when Dom Kew was on hand to bundle home at close range following good work from Jacob Fenton out wide. It could have been even better for the visitors just before the break had Kyle Watkins thumping header crashed the net instead of the post, while Fryatt’s acrobatic stop to tip away Lennon’s deflected effort kept the scoreline at 1-0 going into the break.
The Greens continued their domination into the second period. They got a clinching second goal just beyond the hour mark when Sebastian Robbemond’s sweeping through ball set Fenton free to lash beyond Fryatt and all but sew up the three points for the Greens.
The Greens task in shutting the contest down was undoubtedly aided by the dismissal of Joshua Timson for kicking out at Finlay Armond on 65 minutes. The Greens made the most of the extra man by dominating possession and stringing together some lovely passing moves – one such sweeping move ending in Marcus Pancho smashing an effort across goal after he’d be released down the right.
The Greens now face a quickfire doubleheader at the Longwater Stadium with Deeping Rangers set to visit on Wednesday evening for a 7.45PM kick-off, followed by a tasty derby with Lincoln United on Saturday afternoon – kick-off for that one is at 3PM.
