In The Green Corner
The long wait for a win in 2026 for The Greens concluded last weekend, as an impressive performance against Sandiacre Town at the PSZ Direct Stadium saw Sleaford run out as 3-1 winners. Goals from Kyle Onyon, Ben Coleman and Benji Zalewski was enough for the three points.
New manager Jamie McGhee's first game couldn't have gone any better, and the gaffer was pleased with the application of the group. "Saturday was a really good reflection on everything we worked on at training", he said. "After the first 20minutes of the players trying too hard, which isnt a bad thing, we settled and showed fantastic character to come from behind get ourselves in front and see the game out comfortably.
"To say where the lads have been confidence-wise recently. This was massive if we want to survive and kick on for the remainder of this season. I have been pleasantly surprised by the team I have inherited. They are a raw young group, but there is plenty of talent. Their confidence has been on the floor in recent weeks but they've responded well to the new plan we've put in place."
There were also a couple of new faces in the team on Saturday, and McGhee thinks they can bring a lot to the team going forward. "The 2 new signings that featured on Saturday are players I know well and trust. With Reek, he's consistent, positionally flexible and an all round top lad. Dion [Tanser-Potter] once again holds similar traits to Reek, however Dion will certainly get people on their feet with his ability to beat players and create chances".
Looking ahead to the task on Saturday, McGhee knows it won't be easy to get a result. "Despite Gedling's position in the league, they have always been hard working and a tough side to get a result from, especially at their ground. Although they are below us, and not by much, they pose a very live threat to us and what we aim to achieve for the rest of this season."
Opposition Focus
Gedling MW have slid down the table as the season has progressed, undergoing a torrid run of form themselves. In the last eleven games, The Miners have only gained four points, those coming with a draw against Clipstone and a win against Rainworth MW. This form has left the team second from the bottom.
Earlier in the season at The PSZ Direct Stadium, Sleaford beat Gedling in a comfortable 2-0 victory, thanks to goals from Riley Wilkinson and Silas Stewart-Caws.
