Match Preview - West Bridgford (H)

Cal Law speaks to the media for the first time following his arrival, as Sleaford meet W. Bridgford

A second home match in four days beckons for Sleaford Town, as they face West Bridgford under the lights at the BPH Stadium.

The Greens were victorious at home to Shirebrook on Saturday in truly extraordinary circumstances. A 3-1 victory may seem normal to the eye, but the game was anything but. The visitors took the lead early on in the first half, before a stunning strike from Kyle Onyon drew Sleaford level. The moment of the match, however, was undoubtedly Sleaford’s second, as goalkeeper Ryan Kamm scored from his own penalty area. Josh Parker grabbed a third late on to secure the win, ending his run without a goal.

New signing Cal Law grabbed his first Sleaford start on Saturday, and believes it was a battling performance in the extreme weather which the Greens were good value for the win: “It was great to get my first start so early, particularly when the squad is competitive. I really enjoyed playing my first home game with the lads and we got the rewards I thought we deserved”, he said.

“We knew the first half was going to be tough with the conditions; even going 1-0 down, I thought we had control of the game. The second half showed that, scoring 3 really good goals and the lads one to sixteen all played their part in that. Hopefully in the future fixtures, I can add to the goal contributions and kick on”.

Reflecting more on his move to the club, Law is grateful for the relationships that encouraged him to join Sleaford, and the help they have all given him to settle quickly: ”I’ve known the gaffer for a few years now from trying to sign me before and playing under him last season [at Harrowby].

“Albeit a short time last season, he took the pressure off you as a player, which I liked, letting you just go and enjoy your football. I’ve also known a couple of lads through the years, with or against them. Reeky, Greeny and Harps all messaged me about the club and how they thought it would be a good fit for me. Kaz and I joining at the same time was class as well, as we played the majority of last season and the start of this season together. With me now also being local in Sleaford, it made the decision easy for me”.

Looking ahead to the task of facing West Bridgford, the forward knows Town have to stay in the right frame of mind to get a result: “West Bridgeford will be a good test for us. They have found some form recently and Russ [Cousins] is a good coach there, so will set them up right.

“For us I think it’s simple; we just have to take it game by game. The gaffer and management will set us up how he seems fit to face them. We know how important our home form will be, come the end of the season, and we have to keep raising the bar. It doesn’t matter who we play; we know our standards, and we will just keep trying to pick up as many points as we can to finish as high as we can.”

Opposition Look
The visitors will arrive in Lincolnshire sitting comfortably in mid-table, after grabbing seven points from their last five games, with a Nottinghamshire Senior Cup victory over step-five Retford FC sandwiched in between. However, their recent away form has been less favourable: West Bridgford were beaten 4-0 by Radford and drew 2-2 with Selston in their most recent away games.
