Sleaford Town were back in UCL Divison One action on Tuesday night, losing 3-2 to Coalville Town at the Voltage Solutions Stadium.
Despite leading through Lewis Smith and a late equaliser by Benji Zalewski, the Coalville pressure proved too much, taking the lead late on and sailing to victory from there.
From the off, the hosts showed their strengths in the form of dangerous attacks, with a ball across goal meeting an attacker in the middle of the box, but his header was wide of goal, with Phil McGann watching it sail past his net.
The Greens grew into the game, however, with a speculative effort from Jamie McGhee not troubling Jake Williams in the Coalville net, but setting an indicator for Sleaford's intentions.
They managed to take the lead through Smith just before the half hour mark. Good strength from Andy Whalen allowed him to lay the ball off to his attacking counterpart. Smith set the ball out his feet, looked up, and struck from 25-yards out. The ball kept rising, eventually hitting the back of the net, with Williams not able to get near the thunderous strike.
This goal seemed to change the mentality of the hosts, as they looked to play more through the wings. A ball from deep landed to winger Billy Loomes, who cut inside onto his favoured left foot, and buried his effort into the bottom corner just over five minutes after the opener, worrying Sleaford defenders and fans alike.
They didn't stop there, either. Loomes was again the threat, finding himself on the wing and putting a dangerous ball into the box. It landed to the feet of Tom Mangan, who converted from close range to give the hosts the lead in a very quick turnaround. From here, it was Sleaford who needed to hold out till half time to regain composure.
As the second half commenced, it was Loomes who was again causing trouble, with his shot from range rattling the crossbar, with the ball eventually cleared by the Greens' defence.
The remainder of the match was very end-to-end, with Sleaford confident they could get back into the match, whilst Coalville wanted to kill the game off. Eventually, it was the visitors who found the back of the net.
Joe Wilkinson dispossessed Ryan Sohata at the halfway line, with a lofted ball setting Zalewski through on goal. He lobbed Williams, who flew off his line to try and get to the ball first, and the Greens found themselves level again.
Eventually, the Ravens found themselves ahead with five minutes of normal time remaining. A header towards goal was pushed onto the bar by McGann, but the follow up was tapped into an empty net by Mangan, who found himself putting Coalville ahead for the second time in the match.
Despite pushing on for another equaliser, the Greens fell short, with the referee blowing for full-time, and the visiting players left frustrated that they tasted defeat on the road.
As for the hosts, it is back to winning ways as they look to continue good form ahead of what is likely to be the play-offs at the end of the season.
Sleaford, meanwhile, will be hoping they can transfer this performance to Saturday, where they face FCV Grace Dieu at the PSZ Direct Stadium.
