Late strike not enough for Greens in South Normanton defeat

Sleaford returned to the PSZ Direct Stadium for the second time in as many weeks, losing 2-1 to South Normanton in United Counties League Division One action.

Town went 2-0 down in the second half before a Jonathan Timmins penalty deep into added time gave Sleaford hope that they could get something out of the match.

Manager Matt Evans named an unchanged 11 from the side that beat Pinxton 1-0 last weekend, as the Greens hoped to carry momentum into the match.

The opening 10 minutes were even, but neither side created any major threat to cause danger to one another. Striker Lewis Smith had the first noticeable chance of the match, with a hopeful strike from outside the box landing just wide of the target.

Sleaford were then called into action defensively, with a ball across goal not cleared properly, before Joe Wilkinson cleared the ball to stop any chance of an opener for the visitors.

Lewis Greenfield joined in on attacking chances, beating a man and hitting one from outside the box, only for Ross Etheridge to collect it with ease.

The chances came for both sides in the second half, but the Shiners looked the better of the two sides. Eventually their pressure lead to an opening goal, coming just after the hour mark.

A free kick was whipped in from the left side of goal by Dan Fields, before Ross Goodwin headed home into an almost open net, with Teddy Jefcoate misjudging the ball in.

Substitutions from Sleaford set a positive tone, with the Greens desperate to get back into the match with a goal of their own. This desperation led to a second goal for the visitors, however, when a cross from a corner was converted from close range by George Morris, with Jefcoate demanding a free kick for what he felt was a foul on him.

As the game went into added time, Sleaford looked most likely to score. Constant pressure from a high-pressing Greens side eventually caused The Shiners' defence to crumble, when Andy Whalen was fouled in the box following a good run. Up stood skipper Timmins, who sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, before grabbing the ball and encouraging his side to push on for a leveller.

Despite a few more minutes of added time, South Normanton did enough to secure the three points, with Sleaford having to settle for a home loss.

After the match, the referee sent marching orders to Lewis Rowland and a South Normanton player for a coming together after the match, leading to suspensions for both.

Next up, Sleaford turn their attention to a trip to familiar side Clipstone, whom they have already played twice this season. The fixture will be played on Saturday, December 20, set for a 15:00 kick off.
