Season ends in defeat but plenty of optimism

Season ends in defeat but plenty of optimism

The Greens end the season in 12th place

The Greens season has ended after a gigantic final week saw us play our last four games in just eight days. It was certainly a period that tested the fitness and resilience of the green army, with player/manager Tom Ward having to juggle his squad and nurse injuries in order to be competitive in each game.

And competitive they were. Despite two defeats at the hands of Quorn and Heather St John’s, we earnt a draw away at local rivals Boston Town (1-1, scorer Durkin), and produced a superb performance to beat high-flying Anstey Nomads 1-0 (scorer Asplin) at Eslaforde Park.

The results see The Greens finish the season in 12th place – our highest finish in 6 years, and second highest since 2009-10. It’s also a season which saw Sleaford create new records in relation to home attendance and our biggest win in the UCL Premier Division. So, plenty of optimism for the manager to build on as we look to mount a competitive campaign starting at the end of July.

Although Tom will undoubtedly want to strengthen in the coming months, he has a nucleus of local long serving talent. Brother and captain Charlie Ward and midfielder Joe Braithwaite have both celebrated reaching 150 appearances for the club this season, while George Asplin and Tom Ward himself have reached 100 appearances in green. This experience mixed with the blooding of a handful of 17/18 year olds throughout the season has been fruitful.

The connection between fans and players has become very apparent through the season, with supporters turning up at Eslaforde in their numbers every other week … an average of 163 for each home game.

Ryan Rushen and Jacob Fenton both finished the season tied on 7 goals, although the latter can boast being top league scorer for the greens after Rushen netted in a league cup game earlier in the season.

It’s sure to be a busy summer for Town as they look to start well in the new campaign. Competitive friendlies are being lined up, likely to include games against Grantham Town, Wisbech Town and the mouth-watering prospect of entertaining league one Lincoln City at Eslaforde Park. We will announce further details of all friendlies and other news via this website and our social feeds over the coming weeks.
