Green dig deep to pick up Shirebrook win.

Sleaford Town left Nottinghamshire with three well-deserved points after beating Shirebrook Town 1-0 thanks to Josh Parker’s second goal in as many games.

Greens boss Matt Evans made one change to the side that beat Harrowby last weekend, with Ben Ashall making way for the returning Lewis Smalley, who suffered an injury against Heanor Town.

The game started slowly, as both teams enjoyed their fair share of possession, with no real danger created. Harry Gibbons was found in behind and put his ball across to Will Hollingsworth. The striker met the cross, but his shot was cancelled out between the Shirebrook defence and goalkeeper. Ben Robson had a chance of his own shortly after, but his effort was high, and there was no danger for Rio Alberry between the sticks for the Brook. Sleaford eventually took the lead, just before the half-time whistle. Lewis Greenfield crossed the ball into the path of Robson, who forced a great save out of Alberry, but Parker followed it in to give the Greens the lead.

The second half was Sleaford’s chance to then put in a brave defensive performance, having to battle hard and dig deep to deny Shirebrook from creating any serious chances. Shirebrook striker Oliver Fearon gave Harrison Leech a scare with a point-blank overhead kick, but the young goalkeeper could watch it fly over his bar and away for a goal kick. Sleaford continued to defend well, using their form of the dark arts to frustrate Shirebrook, as Connor McMillan was given a sin-bin for words he said to the referee, as well as a booking for their assistant manager.

A lot of stoppages in play helped Sleaford, as they battled hard, but couldn’t create anything more in attack. The closest they came was a run in behind by Hollingsworth which was deemed offside by the linesman as he beat the goalkeeper. Robson won a header late on which was sent towards goal, but again Alberry was forced into making a terrific save, this time managing to parry it away from goal and kill any danger.

In the final stages of the game, McKenzie Bult was sent off for Shirebrook for a second yellow after a repeated offence on Finlay Armond in Sleaford’s box. This took the sting out the game, and Sleaford could clear the ball to secure their second win in as many games.
