Match Preview – Southwell City vs Sleaford Town, Sat 8th November 2025
It will be the second successive away fixture for The Greens this week, as a visit to The Centenary Ground is scheduled for a 3pm kick-off.
In The Green Corner
Town’s unbeaten run was extended to two last week, after a frantic game away at FCV Grace Dieu saw them draw 4-4 thanks to a stoppage time equaliser from Taylor Gray. Sleaford therefore can make it three consecutive matches without a loss this time around against Southwell, who they have already faced this season.
The last game against The Bramleys was only the fourth match of the season, where both sides left with a point in a 0-0 result. Since that game, Town have played an astonishing nineteen games in all competitions.
Green Army boss Matt Evans has shared his thoughts ahead of Saturday’s game, and began by reflecting on the events of last weekend at Grace Dieu.
“The quality of our attacks were much better last week and scoring 4 goals proves that. We should have had more but then so should our opponent. It was a brilliant game for the neutral but hard work for both clubs!”
It has been three months since the previous fixture between the Sleaford and Southwell, but Evans believes his side have come a long way since then. “Southwell at home seems a long time ago now but that is due to the sheer volume of games we have played since. I am confident we are playing better football and are more settled as a group than ever before.
“However, Southwell have also settled down and had some good results in recent weeks. We should have plenty of players to pick from despite Twiggy and Jono both being suspended”.
Away from the action and earlier this week, it was announced that left back and current top scorer Ben Ashall had left the club to join Retford United on a permanent basis. “We wish Ben all the best” Evans said. “He has an opportunity to play for one of the best teams in the league and as much as we are sad to see him go, we have many players keen to take his shirt and responsibilities.
“We are proud to have supported Bash's development and look forward to seeing where his career takes him”.
Opposition Report
Founded in 1893, Southwell City have been members of the United Counties League Division One since winning the Notts Senior League in 2022. Since their arrival into the division, they have been consistent mid table finishers, ending their campaigns in fourteenth, sixteenth and twelfth since then. Now in fourteenth, Southwell currently find themselves one place below Sleaford in the league table: winning six drawing six and losing eight.
The Bramleys’ recent form has been impressive but inconsistent in their last 5 outings. Eight points have been earned in this run, starting with a win against Shirebrook and a draw at Retford which was then followed by a 6-0 slaughter of Dronfield. A 2-2 draw at home to Sandiacre was then well earned, but a 6-2 defeat away at Stapleford halted their unbeaten streak.
